You must think and practise what and how to say to acchieve it. First you must define your audience (who will you talk with) and your goal (what do yo want form him).

Than, in just few sentences, you must explain:

  • What do you do
  • What is unique in my work
  • Defina a question that can be answered with yes and no

Memes Theory and the Virus Idea

MEMES THEORY

By this theory (Richard Dawkins) a meme is "an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture. A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena.

Proponents theorize that memes may evolve by natural selection in a manner analogous to that of biological evolution. Memes do this through the processes of variation, mutation, competition, and inheritance, each of which influence a meme's reproductive success. Memes spread through the behavior that they generate in their hosts. Memes that propagate less prolifically may become extinct, while others may survive, spread, and (for better or for worse) mutate. Memes that replicate most effectively enjoy more success, and some may replicate effectively even when they prove to be detrimental to the welfare of their hosts. (from Wikipedia).

IDEA VIRUS

A similar theory about spreading information is the Ideavirus by Seth Godin:

Why ideas matter

Interruption marketing is inefficient, and it's easier than ever to ignore marketing through technology such as TiVo and the internet. Viral marketing is an Ideavirus with a product/service at its centre.

A successful Ideavirus is cheaper and more effective than advertising will ever be. It provokes people to take respond, perhaps in kind.

The increased advent of technology has connected people more than they have ever been. Today an Ideavirus can spread faster than ever.

How To Unleash An Ideavirus

Unleasing an Ideavirus is not an exact science. However, there are many ways to increase your chances of an Ideavirus spreading. Most importantly, the idea has to be worth spreading. There needs to be something unique and worthwhile which will make sneezers infect others.

There are two types of sneezers: the promiscuous sneezers and the powerful sneezers. The promiscuous can be motivated by money and rewards to sell ideas to a hive. The powerful sneezers are typically those who have established authority by setting a trend and cannot be bought. A powerful sneezer can be worth many more times a promiscuous sneezer.

Two effective ways of spreading an Ideavirus are thus to reward promiscuous sneezers e.g. The Amazon affiliate program. Or make it easy for powerful sneezers to recommend your idea e.g. Digg/Del.icio.us tags.

Another tactic is to go entirely viral in nature. The more a product is used the better it becomes and spreads. Fax machines, e-mail and Polaroid did this.

The IdeaVirus Formula

An Ideavirus formula comprises a combination of eight variables. There are Sneezers, Hive, Velocity, Vector, Medium, Smoothness, Persistence and Amplifier.

(from Wikipedia).

It is important to understand, how search enginies and other mechanisms like facebook, twitter, online galleries, etc. work. How they choose the priority of showing their contents, which content will be showed at the top of the first page and which most people will never find. That's called Search Engine Optimisation and it's a good idea to hire a professional to do it for you.

Artists Web Site

As a successful artist you will probably want to build yourself your own web site.

First you will need a domain name, most probably something like NameSurname.com. You can register it with a registrar.

Than you will need a place to host your web pages. It is hosted on a web server, the service by itself is called Web hosting.

Web hosting services often offer many additional applications, but one of most importatnt is CMS (content managing system), which allows you to add and change content of your web site. The other way is to have a software for building HTML sites on your computer and to use FTP to transfer them to the web server.

On your web site you will most probably have pages with:

  • CV
  • Artist statement
  • List of exhibitions
  • Artistic references
  • Articles about you
  • Articles and lectures by your own
  • List of art projects
  • Gallery of your works
  • Videos about your work
  • Contact data
  • etc.

Web site with your own domain is like a tie on a business meeting - it has no real purpose, but you just need it to look serious. In contrary to social media, blog and other community web activities, web site is a passive presentation. It means it is mostly visited only by people, looking exactly for data about you and your work.

Most likely you will need a professional to start your own web site.

How to handle Rejection

Most stories about successful careers are stories about extreme persistence. The more bulletproof on defeat, a better chance to succeed!

Don't expect every your efford will result. In contrary: it is possible only 1% of your effords will result in an exhibition, sale, article or any other goal you want to achieve. It is very usuall only 3-5% of your applications or requests will be answered and only half of them in your behalf. Keep knocking and it will open once - that and hard work is the secret of success.
